Indian Bridal session at Japanese Friendship Garden, San Jose

On this gorgeous summer afternoon I was given the pleasure of working with Ragi. Her traditional Indian bridal dress was aglow with beautiful pastel color and flowing textures. Nikki Ngo, A-List Make-up Artist and Hair Stylist prepared our client with exquisite detail.

As the title refers, our location for the shoot was at Japanese Friendship Garden in San Jose. I love this location, it's plush with soft rolling hills, rich vegitation, Koi ponds (2) a small Japanese structure. I worked this set with a Nikkor 70-200f2.8 VRII and a reflector. I put the sunlight behind the subject because this makes a beautiful aura around Ragi that photographers call "rim" light. Doing this can cause the subject to be dark and by using a reflector (a large white surface) allows me to "bounce" a little light onto the subject for an even exposure, a balanced fill.

A question that was asked of me recently is why do photographers prefer to shoot early morning and late afternoon. The answer is simple; when the harsh light of the sun is directly over-head it is very unflattering to the subject due to harsh shadows and high contrast. Of course we as photographers cannot always choose what time or place we are working, this is where experience and technique make their mark.
